#AskFF: Guide to RunDisney Disneyland Races

The inaugural runDisney Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend will take place November 14-16 at the Disneyland Resort in California. While there are many runDisney races on both coasts, each has their own unique qualities and they all draw quite a crowd, including many first time runners. Whether you are a first time half marathoner or a first time runDisney runner, everyone can benefit from a few tips from those who have raced on the west coast in the past. Along with my own tips, I have gathered information from some of my favorite running friends that I have had the pleasure of meeting up with during Disneyland runDisney races.

This #AskFF question was asked in regards to the event:

“I’m doing a runDisney race for the first time (Avengers Half at Disneyland). What do I need to know and do?”

A-guide-to-running-at-Disney

First of all, don’t be overwhelmed! With some tips and tricks, you will feel confident going into your first runDisney race. Another good tip is to be sure you know the course. This will make you feel better about exactly where you are going, where the aid stations are, and where to tell your family they can cheer you on.

That tip leads into my next one, which is to read the official race program. You will get a copy of the program at the race expo, so be sure you have yours and take a little time to read through it. It has its own tips on fueling for the race, common courtesies while running, and start and finish times and information. Speaking of the finish, be sure to plan for it! The family reunion area can become a bit crowded and hectic, so make a plan for exactly where you will meet up with friends and family. Cell service can be spotty with so many people in one area trying to use their phones, so don’t rely on them to plan a meeting spot: go ahead and have a plan set.

The following are tips from some of my running friends who have run in Disneyland before:Katrina: Blogger at Katrina Elle

1.) Stay on Disney property to make race day and your trip easier. The race start is within walking distance of the on property resorts, so no buses needed! If you do choose to stay on property, you can even relax and enjoy the fireworks from your hotel window at Paradise Pier hotel.

2.) It may be tempting, but try to avoid walking around the parks a lot beforehand so your legs can rest for race day. You can enjoy the theme parks after you are finished with your race, so book your stay to extend after the race and not before.

3.) Take in all of the spectators during the race as it’s usually a once in a lifetime experience, especially if you’re going for your coast to coast medal!

1.) Hit the Expo early.  Crowds tend to be heavier when the locals are getting off work.  You’ll find the best variety if you head into the Expo early in the day.

2.)  Wear your shirt and medal proudly to the parks.  Let the cast members and fellow park goers tell you how awesome you are: after 13.1 miles, you deserve it!

3.) Dress up.  And by dress up, I mean wear a costume!  Disneyland runners pull out all the stops when it comes to running in character.  Maybe it’s the proximity to Hollywood but you sure see some amazing outfits on the course at Disneyland. Go ahead and join in the fun!

1.) The Avengers half will travel through Disneyland and California Adventure parks, as well as the streets of Anaheim and Angels Stadium. If you’re interested in character or theme park photos, stop for them while running through the parks. It’s important to note that the race route brings runners through the theme parks early on, so have your cameras ready – you won’t see Disney characters again until after you finish the race. (Never fear – Disney does provide plenty of entertainment along the remainder of the route!)

2.) Disneyland races give plenty of opportunities for fun photos, so bring a handheld camera along or use your cell phone! If you don’t bring a camera with you, it’s ok – keep an eye out for the official race photographers who will snag photos of runners throughout the race. Be sure your race bib number is showing so they can identify you!

3.) Want to enjoy a nice sit-down post race meal? No problem! Disneyland has plenty of restaurant varieties and styles to choose from. Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR’s) are recommended ahead of time and can be made through the online system at www.disneyland.com or by calling (714) 781-DINE. Dining reservations can be made as far as 60 days in advance. A few of my favorites include Blue Bayou, the Plaza Inn, and Café Orleans.

Hopefully by following these tips, you will have a great race experience at the runDisney Avengers half marathon in November! Good luck to everyone running, I will be there with you in spirit.
